1
INTRODUCTION
A.
Backgroud of the Problem
Reading is a receptive skill - through it we receive information. Reading is the important skill because it can improve other
language skill, such as speaking, writing, and listening. These language skills
cannot be separated each other. Reading
is the most important skill to master in order to ensure success not only in
learning English, but also in learning in any content class where reading in
English is required. By reading, students will be easy to develop their
knowledge in other language skills and get much information for their
knowledge. Reading is an active process of
constructing meaning because like reading is the key of every door in the real
world can prepare us for better academic achievements.
In reading, the readers have to combine new information that they got
from the text and their background knowledge in order to improve their
comprehension. As stated by David Nunan, “ Reading is a fluent process of
readers combining information from a text and their own background knowledge to
build meaning.”[1]
It means the readers’s background knowledge integrates with the text to create
the meaning. The students are success in comprehending text if they can achieve
the meaning of a text.
Reading comprehension is determine
the consideration of content, function, and meaning of text by combining their
understanding and background knowledge. In addition, reading comprehension is
the ability to read a text, process it and understand its meaning. It means students
use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with
their ability to comprehend what is read.
There are many alternatives methods
that can be used by teacher to improve students’ comprehension. One of the alternatives
that the teacher can using the communicative language teaching method in reading
comprehension. Communicative language teaching is method that is developing
procedures in the teaching of the four skills and this activities carrying out
meaningful tasks; and using languge which is meaningful to the learner promote
learning. Duncan Hunter stated that using this procedure it was also possible to identify key texts; an
expression I coin here to describe those articles whose very detailed
examination was important to the understanding of a selected word’s role and
developing sense in the Journal discourse.[2]
It means that using the CLT method teacher can help student’s comprehension in
establishing meaning of context because contextualization is a basic premis in
assembling of communicative language teaching in classroom activity.
In basic teaching reading comprehension,
the teacher must communicative and interact with students for help them the difficult
words in context, with CLT method students can sharing their problems with a
teacher in establishing meaning in the structures. With that interaction
students can solve the diffuclt words to more understand in learning reading
comprehension.
Furthermore, based on the researcher’s preliminary observation on December,
10, 2014 with one lecturer of PBI semester one at STAIN djamil djambek
bukittinggi,[3]
the researcher found that the teacher had applied communicative language
teaching method in teaching reading. The researcher indicated that the teacher
has applied the method in four class at one semester in English education of
STAIN djamil djambek bukittinggi. The teacher began the class with greeting and
reading holi qur’an togerher with students. Afterthat, the teacher took the
students’ attendance next the teacher presented a lesson in front of the class
that focuses on the material about context clues. The teacher explained about
how giving the definition in the context clues. Then teacher and students
discussed and communicative about understanding words and sentence. Then, the
teacher gave a text and the students analyze where the definition clues incircuit.
Based on the explanation above, the
researcher wants to analyze the method of using CLT in improving students’
reading comprehension at English Education section,State Islamic College M.
Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi “ The Effectiveness
of Using Communicative Language Teaching in improving Students’ Reading Comprehension at the first
semester of English education section, State Islamic College Sjech M.Djamil Djambek

Indentification of the problem
Based on the fact above, there are
the problems occurred in students’ reading comprehension which can be
identified as follow:
1. Some of the students have limited of vocabulary that
made them difficult to comprehend the text.
2. Some of the students were difficult to answer the
question about context clues that is given
3. Some of the students have low score in midterm of
test.
C.
Limitation of the problem
Based on the problems above, the
researcher limits the problem into the effectiveness of using communicative
language teaching method in improving students’ reading comprehension at English Education section,State Islamic
College M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. This limitation is done to avoid the
misunderstanding and also to reach the target of the research effectively.
D. Formulation of the problem
The
problem of the research is formulated into following question: “ is the use of
communicative language learning method effective in improving students’ reading
comprehension at the English
Education section,State Islamic College M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi?”
E. Purpose of the Research
Based o
formulation of the research, the purpose of study is to know the effectiveness
of using communicative language learning method in improving students’ reading
comprehension at the English
Education section,State Islamic College M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi?”
F. Significance of the Research
The
researcher supposes that the research finding might be useful for many people,
such as:
1.
English teacher
This method will give
easy for teacher to interacting students ability in reading comprehension.
2.
The students
The students, it is
expected that students can improve their reading comprehension if students
intercommunicating with teacher when the students needed the more explanation
about the difficult words.
3.
The researcher
This research is
supposed to be a supporting material or source which can be useful for the next
researchers
G. Definition of the keys Terms
Some essential terms used in this research are defined
as follow :
1.
Communicative language learning is a broad approach to
teaching that resulted from focus on communication as the organizing principle
for teaching rather than a focus on mastery of the grammatical system of the
language.
